Pittsburg CrossingReturn to index of stories... |
Overnight border crossings between Pittsburg and Canada will soon be restricted. Customs officials say on an average night only two vehicles cross at Pittsburg between midnight and eight a.m. Under the proposed change, only prescreened local residents will be able to use the crossing overnight. Others will have to drive to the crossing in Beecher Falls Vermont, 32 miles away. Members of New Hampshire's congressional delegation are opposed to the change. Customs officials are scheduled to answer questions about the policy on August 15th at the Pittsburg School. |

The state hopes to cut down on fatal accidents by cutting rumble strips into the center line of a deadly section of Route 101 in Milford. As many as six people have died there in the past ten years. When a car drifts over the strips, it causes a rumble loud enought to alert the driver to correct the steering. The Transportation Department says if the strips are useful, more may be added around the state. |
Intro Newington SecedeReturn to index of stories... |
In recent months, speculation has grown as to whether the town of Newington will - as a result of their frustration with the statewide property tax - actually try to secede from the State of New Hampshire. The town's Board of Selectmen held a public hearing last night to give residents a chance to voice their opinions. And more than 300 people showed up to make their thoughts known. Outlook Correspondent Jack Gray has the story. |
Intro Water MeetReturn to index of stories... |
Last night, in the town of Barrington, community members had an opportunity to express concerns over a proposed water bottling facility in their region. USA Springs Inc. of Pelham has applied for a permit, with the state, for the withdrawal of ground water on a parcel of land in Nottingham and Barrington. \ Residents are concerned that the facility, if approved, would pump more than 400,000 gallons per day, making it the largest commercial extraction in the state. Officials from the Department of Environmental Services were on hand to answer questions from residents of Barrington and surrounding communities. One bone of contention. is how the process will be monitored before and after bottling begins. |

Book ReturnedReturn to index of stories... |
Finally tonight, instead of trying to sell a book that could have fetched thousands of dollars, an Exeter couple is giving it to the Boston Public Library. The book was apparently stolen from the library 80 years ago. Julie and David Geissler inherited the first edition copy of Charles Darwin's "Origin of Species." It is one of 12-hundred-50 original copies. The Geisslers recently learned the book could be worth anywhere from 15 to 72 thousand dollars. Soon after they decided to return it to the library. Imagine the overdue fines on that book! |
